WELLS AND PEOPLE

We had our wells within our houses.
We drank well water, washed,
kept a certain order,a cleanliness. One night
someone got up and emptied his cup of poison
into the well. After that, each got up
in turn, one by one, and emptied out
his cup of poison. When day broke,
no one would drink water. Until, Finally,
the stairs sank into the well. The inhabitants,
went up on the roof and remained there motionless
for hours with open mouths in hopes that a drop
of rain might fall. The itinerant photographer
passed by on the street below. He did not see them.
He was looking at the death notices stuck on the pillars?
and on the large doors of the shuttered shops.
